Mechatronic Prototyping is the second phase of our designing process. It involves the creation of a fully functional smart device. Think of it as the (Internet of Things) device.
It is the synergistic integration of the mechanical aspects of a given product along with electronic and computer control features, to make the device work seamlessly and fulfill its intended purpose. In other words, the various components and subcomponents of your prototype are designed and assembled together to create a fully functional system.
Examples of a complete mechatronic system include:
A solar powered sensory system to collect data from a field
A medical device that connects to various sensors, and transmits the data online
A fish tank tracker that automatically feeds the fish and updates the owners regularly on the health level of the fish environment
The mechanical aspect, at this stage, is centered on the look and feel of the product, as well as the placement of components and electronics within the device itself. The design of the mechanical aspects of the product focus on the manufacturability of the product. This includes:
Appearance and texture
The electrical aspect focuses on various areas involved in creating a functional electrical / IoT device including:
Sensors, motors, and actuators
Communication signals including WiFi, Bluetooth, and cellular communication
Power management, charging, and energy storage
Creating self powered devices using various energy harvesting technologies
PCB design, component choice, and providing a Bill of material (BOM)
In other words, this is the production phase that focuses on powering the device and transmitting signals to and from a central controlling system. Electrical wiring is also installed at this stage.
Computer Controlled Aspects
Certain designs require a form of artificial intelligence to control its behaviour. For such prototypes, we select the best processor that runs the device and its connections, and any other applications associated with the device.This includes sensors, cellular, and GPS
In cases where the device being designed involves an app, we work with our partners to create a smartphone application that can connect to your new device
